As an evil curse silently descends among the shadows of peaceful fields and villages, is love alone justifiable for exchanging one’s soul with dark magic to become a marksman who never misses his shots? Filled with beautiful melodies, Der Freischütz is Carl Maria von WEBER’s heritage for German romantic operas that paved the way for composers like Richard WAGNER. With all the makings of a perfect model for compositions, the ingenious orchestration brings emotional nuances of vivid images and vibrant colors to life as exemplified in the modest forest hunter, the gentle and kind maiden, the helpless desperation, and the eerie Wolf’s Glen who will be the final victor in the struggle between the holy forces and the dark side? What price should one pay for being opportunistic and corrupted by powers? Centered on the antithesis between good and evil, this opera remains highly relevant and popular over 200 years as it encourages and inspires us to think critically in the 21^st century, particularly now as 3 years have passed after the first COVID-19 outbreak. Weiwuying’s novel production by Tiroler Landestheater und Symphonieorchester Innsbruck from Austria focuses on its psychological depth with spoken dialogues replaced by the master composer Hector BERLIOZ’s recitatives to further highlight vocal features.
