A boy, confined to his bed by illness, eagerly awaits the fairy tales his mother recounts each day. Today, he proposes a twist to the sorrowful ending of The Little Match Girl. Armed with magical matches that can reveal wishes, she embarks on a journey into the forest, where she encounters Big Red Riding Hood, the Emperor Who Sheds New Clothes, and the Sleeping Beauty Who Can’t Fall Asleep. With the girl's assistance, they each confront and resolve their inner conflicts. As the boy unveils his version of The Little Match Girl’s ending, his mother comes to understand their own real-world happy ending...
This summer, we invite you and your child to discover the power within these stories, to find hope through a child’s eyes. When faced with the challenges of life, might “thinking differently” unveil a new outcome?
Perhaps, you’ll see the boy’s eyes sparkle as he exclaims, “Mom, I don't like this story. Read it again, and I'll change it for you!”
This piece is part of the “Children’s Theatre Pre-Exhibition Project” at the 2023 Taipei Children’s Arts Festival. It is inspired by “show writer” Joël Pommerat, a prominent figure in French theater. He once said, “I want to talk to children in the way I wish adults had spoken to me when I was young, and at the same time, I hope children can talk to adults in a more normal way.” In keeping with this spirit, 4 Goods Studio begins its very first dialogue with children...
In this reimagined tale, who might you encounter?
