The university was originally established as the「National School of Arts」 on October 31, 1955. In 1960, it was reorganized as the 「National Taiwan Academy of Arts,」 and in August 1994, it was upgraded to the「National Taiwan Institute of Arts.」 On August 1, 2001, it was officially renamed 「National Taiwan University of Arts.」At the school's founding ceremony, then-Minister of Education Mr. Chang Chi-yun expressed his high hopes for the institution, describing it as 「a fertile ground for the renaissance of Chinese arts.」 Over the years, the university has shouldered the historical mission of carrying forward artistic traditions while embracing innovation, upholding the principles of 「active creativity and the pursuit of excellence.」 As it has continuously evolved and thrived through the changing tides of time, the university has remained committed to cultivating artistic talent.Following the completion of a university-wide departmental integration in the 2007 academic year, the institution has fully matured into a 「comprehensive arts university.」

國立臺灣藝術大學創立於 1955 年 10 月 31 日，在創校典禮上，時任教育部長張其昀曾寄予厚望，稱其為「中華藝術復興的沃土」。

多年來，學校肩負傳承藝術傳統與推動創新的使命，秉持「積極創造、追求卓越」的精神培育藝術人才。隨著校務持續發展與轉型，在 2007 學年度完成全校系所整合後，已發展為一所體系完整、學門多元的綜合型藝術大學。

目前臺藝大共有美術、設計、傳播、表演藝術、及人文五大學院，共設14系所、5個獨立研究所，1個學士學位學程，2個教學中心等單位，架構出14系、21碩士班、6博士班、1個學位學程的教學系統；學制上，除日間大學部與一般碩博士班外，尚有進修學士班(夜間上課)、二年制在職進修班與碩士生在職進修專班(週五晚上及週六、日上課)。

表演藝術學院目前包含四個系所合一的學系及一個博碩士班：戲劇學系與碩士班、音樂學系與碩士班、中國音樂學系與碩士班、舞蹈學系與碩士班及跨域表演藝術研究所博碩士班。

臺藝大校內的場館為 國立臺灣藝術大學 表演藝術中心，包含臺藝表演廳、演講廳、國際會議廳。
