Contemporary music serves as a kaleidoscope, reflecting a
myriad of imaginations. Composers craft imaginative soundscapes, and audiences
engage with these musicalized
imaginations, fostering dialogue, negotiation, and communion.
Imagination is a construction with a distance from
reality. F. DONATONI’s Hot electrifies
the concert with its dynamic ‘imaginary jazz’, evolving through repetition and
transmutation. Gougalon, described as an ‘imaginary folk music’ by Unsuk
CHIN, depicts the street theatre of post-war Seoul in a series of imaginative
scenes.
Imagination collides. Corrente and Tactus
draw from Western music history, creatively reimagined by Magnus LINDBERG and
Marc-André DALBAVIE, sparking intriguing friction. Michael DAUGHERTY’s
postmodern collage of popular music idioms in Le Tombeau de Liberace challenges
conventional perceptions of contemporary music.
Premieres by Taiwanese composers underline imagination’s
role in shaping expectations. LIN Shuo-Chun, inspired by Generative A.I.,
employs music to depict its precision and uncertainty. LIU Wei-Chih,
referencing M. BAKHTIN’s concept of
‘heteroglossia’, uses music to address societal realities, fostering dialogue
and embracing differences.
