The repeated melodies, akin to the passage and accumulation of life, capture the essence of "living in the moment" through dance amidst gains, losses, joys, and sorrows. Inspired by early 20th-century composer Maurice RAVEL's work Boléro, this dance piece weaves together life experiences. From the year of Ravel's birth (1875) to his final composition, these numbers symbolize the codes that unlock life: birth and rebirth, the emergence of old memories, the cyclical changes of the seasons, and the unceasing flow of life.

In 2006, CHOU Shu-yi's dance work 1875 Ravel and Boléro premiered in Kaohsiung. The late dancer Mangie LO recognized CHOU's raw talent, was amazed by his work, and immediately offered her full encouragement. This support helped Taiwan cultivate a choreographer with immense potential.

The ever-evolving 1875 Ravel and Boléro competed in 2009 at the highly competitive Sadler's Wells Theatre in London, alongside outstanding dance films from around the world, and won first prize. The following year, it was invited to perform at the same theater, where it was highlighted as a standout company. In 2010, the piece also made a significant impact at New York's internationally renowned Fall for Dance Festival, receiving good reviews.

Upon returning to Taiwan with international acclaim, CHOU Shu-yi chose to leave the grand stages and connect with the local landscape. He embarked on a four-year "Dance Travel Project," turning train stations, temple courtyards, and street alleys into stages. Since 2021, as the Weiwuying Artist-In-Residence, CHOU has committed to reviving the piece to reach more modern dance audiences, launching the meaningful three-year "Bolero in Kaohsiung" dance tour project.

Over more than a thousand days, CHOU and dancers performed across all 38 districts of Kaohsiung, undeterred by scorching sun or pouring rain. This allowed countless people, who had never set foot in an arts venue, to unknowingly enjoy the same performance as audiences in London and New York. Enthusiasts began to follow the performance from location to location, tracing the steps of Boléro.

In the fall of 2024, after three years and 56 performances, the piece, enriched by the energy of mountains and seas, countryside and city, will return to the theater.

In the 1875 Ravel and Boléro" 2024 Theater Remake at Weiwuying, you will witness how this piece, born in Kaohsiung and deeply rooted over a thousand days, magnificently showcases its vibrant, rich, and continuously evolving life force, more powerful than ever before.

    Choreographer|CHOU Shu-yi

Starting with the body, CHOU uses dance as a language to communicate with the world, focusing on the relationship between people and their social environment. In past creations and projects, he has skillfully employed interdisciplinary collaboration to emphasize the public engagement of art. His choreography explores the value of life, reflecting the individual or collective states in different social contexts, proposing an "Asian physical vocabulary." CHOU's work is presented in various forms, such as theater, non-traditional theater, and dance films. He continuously travels and creates site-specific art. From 2020 to 2024, he relocated to southern Taiwan to serve as the first artist-in-residence at National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying).

    Stage & Lighting Designer|LEE Chi-wai

Lee Chi-wai has been active in the Hong Kong dance scene as a stage and lighting designer.

He had the privilege of working at the Hong Kong City Contemporary Dance Company’s technical

department in the early stage of his career, and had encountered many who have a profound impact in his development. Lee’s current stage of creation is passive, yet focused. He hopes to keep a clear mind and work on projects that will be remembered in the future.
