The original workSimcheongga (The Song of Simcheong) depicts the touching legend of the filial daughter Simcheong, who sacrifices herself by plunging into the Indang Sea so that her blind father may regain his sight. Traditional narratives center on Confucian virtues and self-sacrifice. 

However, Seeing Simcheong deliberately shifts away from this filial-piety-oriented perspective, turning its focus instead toSimcheong’s father — Sim Hak-gyu — and his life journey. Having lost his sight at the age of twenty and his wife soon after, he raises his newborn daughter alone, guided by endless love and guilt while groping through darkness to discover what it means to be a father. As the story unfolds, the audience witnesses the heart-rending transformation of a man who, after mistakenly offering his daughter as a sacrificial tribute, comes to repentance and reunion. 

The work takes “making sound visible” as its core artistic concept. Drawing from the rhythmic language of pansori narrative singing, it builds a multilayered theatrical space through dynamic staging, laser lighting, and fully movable LED imagery. On stage, light and projection are no longer mere supporting elements but active co-performers alongside the actors and musicians — presenting a new aesthetic of traditional opera fused with contemporary technology. 



Commonly referred to as ACC, the Asia Culture Center is located in Gwangju, South Korea. Established by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and officially opened in 2015, it is the largest transnational hub for cultural and artistic creation in Asia. 

More than a national theatre and exhibition complex, ACC operates under the core philosophy of a “creation-based theatre.” It is dedicated to nurturing contemporary artists, supporting original content, and fostering dialogue and co-creation among artists across Asia. 

Founded in 2016, MUTO is an interdisciplinary creative collective active in both Korea and the international performing arts scene. Its members span a wide range of disciplines, including music composition, sound design, live performance, visual creation, and theatre direction. Often described as “architects of sound” and “a cross-disciplinary laboratory of East Asian philosophy,” MUTO explores the relationship between sound, space, and perception. 

For Seeing Simcheong, MUTO not only composed the original score but also designed the overall sound structure, live performance, and spatial acoustics. Through sound, they penetrate the layers of narrative and emotion, creating an organic connection between tradition and the contemporary. 

IPKOASON is a cross-disciplinary creative group composed of a new generation of Korean pansori artists. The name derives from the Korean phrase “입과손” (ip-gwa-son), meaning “mouth and hands,” symbolizing the pansori performer’s art of storytelling through voice and body. The group’s mission is to make pansori visible and relevant in contemporary performance, allowing sound itself to become an image on stage. 

In Seeing Simcheong, IPKOASON is responsible for the overall narrative structure, pansori adaptation, and stage language design, working in collaboration with MUTO to construct a creative environment centered on the concept of “making sound visible.”
