    About the Performance

★ A tender adaptation of Chen Chih-Yuan’s beloved picture book On My Way to Buy Eggs
★ A celebrated theatrical piece by artist Hong Chien-Tsang that reimagines time, people, and place

Adapted from Chen Chih-Yuan’s award-winning picture book, On My Way to Buy Eggs tells a touching story that captures the quiet charm of daily life in Taiwan. Directed by acclaimed theater maker Hong Chien-Tsang and co-created with Lin Chi-Sian, the production transforms everyday city streets into a fantastical dreamscape through material theater and shadow work.

What begins as a simple errand—Shau-Yu’s journey to buy eggs for her father—quickly unfolds into a magical adventure fueled by her imagination. Narrow lanes become enchanted paths, shopkeepers turn into playful characters, and the sky feels almost within reach. Seen through a child’s eyes, this deeply emotional tale explores themes of absence, longing, and the creativity sparked by everyday moments.

Using the language of contemporary theater, the production blends visual storytelling, diverse materials, and light-and-shadow play to bring Shau-Yu’s inner world vividly to life. Rock Rock Crafting Collective’s signature “moment-capturing” aesthetic imbues each scene with poetic sensitivity and spontaneity. With an imaginative gaze, the team re-creates the textures of Taiwanese life—iron window grilles, old grocery stores, and rustling leaves—into a richly immersive experience.

Since its release, On My Way to Buy Eggs has received international acclaim, including a place on Publisher’s Weekly’s list of Best Children’s Books of 2003. Inspired by author Chen Chih-Yuan’s childhood memories, the story finds new expression on stage, inviting audiences of all ages to rediscover the wonder in the everyday.

As part of the 2025 Taipei Children’s Arts Festival, On My Way to Buy Eggs offers a theatrical experience that transcends language and age. It’s a heartfelt invitation to enter a child’s world—to explore, imagine, and above all, find the courage to embrace the unknown.
