HUNG Chien-Han X HUNG Wei-Yao x Ray TSENG  Family Triangle

Family is more than just DNA.

What constitutes a family? In modern times, the definition of family has greatly expanded. However, issues remain, such as gender inequality and legal limitations on the reproductive rights of same-sex couples. 

As this is the third installment of a trilogy by sister and brother duo HUNG Chien-Han and HUNG Wei-Yao commissioned by the Taipei Arts Festival, it seemed only fitting to expand the team of creators into a trio, with the addition of Ray TSENG. In their first installment of this trilogy in 2019, Family Romance, Chien-Han and Wei-Yao discussed familial relationships. They then challenged the nature of time and theater in their second installment, Grandmother Paradox, in 2020. This work, Family Triangle, is based on their true story and integrates theater, performance art, and dialogue, making use of each of the three creators’ areas of expertise, such as lighting, immersive and participatory performances, and interdisciplinary practices. Chien-Han and Ray are wife and wife. They want to have a child together that has both of their DNA through in vitro fertilization. Ray will provide the egg and Chien-Han will carry the child with Wei-Yao agreeing to donate the sperm. However, in Taiwan, this plan is thwarted under the current law.

Personal narrative is at the core of this production, which is divided into non-chronological acts with images interspersed. In one act, Chien-Han and Wei-Yao regale the audience with stories of their childhood and the differences in expectations of them due to gender based on Taiwan’s societal norms and traditional patriarchy. In another act, Ray and Chien-Han have a table tennis competition, refereed by Wei-Yao, to determine the surname of their child. This is followed by the showing of videotaped interviews by Wei-Yao with his sister’s cat and his maternal uncle. In a raw dialogue between Ray and Wei-Yao, Ray expresses her envy of Wei-Yao for having sperm and being able to date, marry, and start a family with a woman without anyone’s help. Her inability to do this makes her feel angry as she believes that others may see her as incomplete. Although the issues addressed are serious, humor is added at just the right time to break the tension. The journey of these three artists and activists, who are all part of the same family, although not necessarily due to DNA, is bittersweet, filled with frustration, pain, gratitude, and love.
