Amjad Ali Khan casts a kind
of charm on audiences, sending out ripples of excitement. —The New York Times
Sarod
maestro Amjad Ali Khan is bringing
the art of sarod music, in its quiet allure and reinvigorating power, to us! The sarod is a plucked stringed instrument
originating from north India. It possesses a tone that is warm and enigmatic
and has a wide pitch range as well as a rich variety of timbral colors. Thanks
to the sympathetic strings and the fretless design, the instrument can produce
reverberating resonance and the glissandi, hence endless possibilities for
poetic expressions. Spring 2024, sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan, along with his
two sons Amaan Ali Khan and Ayaan Ali Khan, who are outstanding musicians in their
own rights, will bring the art of the sarod music to us! The 2017 gold medalist
of the Global Music Awards and the awardee of the 1995 Gandhi UNESCO medal will
present the sarod music in all its quiet allure and expressive power. Be it
performed solo in a contemplative number, be it performed in lively ensemble
with the tabla drums, Mr. Khan's sarod will make you sway with the music, open
your heart and spirit. It is a simultaneously soothing and rejuvenating
sensorial, as well as spiritual, experience you don’t want to miss!
Sarod Maestro: Amjad Ali
Khan Amjad Ali Khan is at the
height of his inventive powers and currently unequalled. —BBC Music Magazine He was all of 6 years old when Amjad Ali Khan gave his
first recital of sarod. It was the beginning of yet another glorious chapter
in the history of Indian classical music. Taught by his father Haafiz Ali Khan, Amjad
Ali Khan was born to the illustrious Bangash lineage rooted in the Senia
Bangash School of music. Today he shoulders the sixth generation of inheritance
in this legendary lineage.
In 1995, Mr. Khan awarded the Gandhi UNESCO Medal in Paris for his composition
Bapukauns. In 2003, the maestro received “Commander of the Order of Arts and
letters” by the French Government and the Fukuoka Cultural grand prize in Japan
in 2004. He has performed at the WOMAD Festival in Adelaide and New Plymouth,
Edinburgh Music Festival, World Beat Festival in Brisbane. His collaborations
include a piece composed for the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by
Yoshikazu Fukumora titled Tribute to Hong Kong. In 2009, Mr. Khan presented his
Sarod concerto Samagam with the Taipei Chinese Orchestra. The same year Amjad
Ali Khan was nominated for a Grammy award in the best traditional world music
album category.
Amjad Ali Khan with Joe
Walsh have come together with a 3 song EP named 'Prayers' as a tribute to
doctors, frontline workers and for everyone who is going through these trying
times. It's a wonderful project where the East meets West with an idea to bring
the spirit of sharing the great unique treasures of their own artistic
traditions, as well as finding common ground at both the cellular and cosmic
levels of two musical traditions, which are often held to be radically
different.
The Sarod-playing family are partnering this year with the brilliant, multiple
Grammy nominee, Chinese pipa soloist Wu Man. This cross-cultural project
supports the AAPI (Asian-American and Pacific Islander) movement, raising
awareness to the discrimination, victimisation, violence and racism this group
has been subjected to in America.
Khan Also performed at Royal Albert Hall in August 2022 for the BBC Proms.
Sarod: Amaan Ali Bangash & Ayaan Ali Bangash "Both brothers have developed individual and
distinctive musical voices at a very young age, and both look set to become
central figures in North Indian classical music-worthy heirs to their father's
crown..."
<Songlines World Music
Magazine>
Amaan Ali Bangash and Ayaan Ali Bangash represent the
seventh generation of a musical lineage known as the Senia Bangash School.
Disciples of their father the great sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan, both were
initiated into the fine art of sarod playing from an early age, with each
brother giving their first public performances at the age of eight.
They have performed across the globe, including appearances at Carnegie Hall
and the Kennedy Center in the USA, Royal Festival Hall, Symphony Hall and
Barbican Centre in the UK, Konzerthaus Vienna, Concertgebouw Amsterdam,
Esplanade Singapore and Sydney Opera house. They have also appeared at
festivals including WOMAD, Edinburgh International Festival and World Beat in
Brisbane.
Their pioneering approach to the repertoire has led
them to collaborate with percussionist Evelyn Glennie, guitarist Derek Trucks
of the Allman Brothers Band, Bulgarian violinist Elmira Darvarova and folk
singer Carrie Newcomer. They also regularly perform their father’s sarod
concerto Samaagam which they have played with Britten Sinfonia, London
Philharmonic, Adelaide Symphony, Singapore Chinese Symphony and Moscow State
Philharmonic Orchestras.
Along with their father they are Gold Medal Winners at the Global Music Awards
for their outstanding contribution to the global music industry and excellence
in the classical music sphere. This honour was bestowed on the trailblazing
trio in recognition of their “Peace Worshipers” album which was released in
July 2017 by Affetto Records and distributed by Naxos.
