🎭 Showcase 🎭
📌 Showcase

FreeSteps NiNi HORSE
Launched in 2013, this choreographic series, titled FreeSteps, has demonstrated choreographer SU Wei-Chia’s mastery. He meticulously contours the body of every dancer in an almost sculptural manner. Condensed and distilled over extended performance durations, his FreeSteps episodes are refined into contemporary body landscapes. FreeSteps – NiNi is a choreographic piece tailor-made for an outstanding dancer like FANG Yu-Ting, who brilliantly captures the dance stage, herself and the changing surroundings as parts of her dance in a succinct yet detail-minded way. During sunset hours, the presence of a lamp grows as the sun heads for the horizon. Just like Taipei’s unique cityscape with elusive light and shadow, all the surroundings on site merges with the performer. As the audience’s senses are amplified to the greatest, a spatial freeze and serene silence is formed, creating a two-way bodily dialogue and stimulating process for the dancer and the audience – “a three-dimensional study best appreciated in person,” as described by the New York Times.
Landscape on the New Horizon of Sheng : A Tale of Two Cities Li-chin LI
In recent years, Taiwanese sheng player Li-chin Li, who has garnered significant attention in the international contemporary performing arts scene, will bring a new production to this Showcase: "Landscape on the New Horizon of Sheng : A Tale of Two Cities," featuring its second chapter. "Vox II" captures natural sounds, conducting a poetic forest stroll amidst the incessant environmental soundscape. Meanwhile, "Chants Pour Cyber Nostalgie" showcases seven fragments, exploring the interplay between the virtual and the real. Through the sheng, it interprets cyberpunk aesthetics, combined with tightly integrated lighting interactions, guiding the audience into the central concept of "A Tale of Two Cities" — a paradoxically distant yet "tangibly reachable" notion. *This performance is commissioned by C-LAB Sound Art Festival.
HORSE
The visual identity of HORSE is a Chinese character made of three horses, indicating the strong motivation and explosive energy. Founded in December 2004, HORSE has established a distinctive profile with delicate physical movements and unrestricted creativities. In 2008, Velocity has won the Taishin Arts Award Taiwan’s grand arts prize. In 2013, 2 Men has won the 1st prize and Audience Award in Kurt Jooss Preis, PACT Zollverein, Essen, Germany. In recent years, CHEN Wu-Kang, the artistic director, and SU Wei-Chia, the general director, have developed their unique art praxis. They continue to advance the company into the bright future, a period of metamorphism for them in the Taiwanese contemporary dance scene. HORSE is also endeavor on international collaboration, outreach program and curatorial projects. The practices include the platform Primal Chaos Dance x Sounds Improvisation, Back to the moment Dancing Talking Bar, a dance cinema in which creators and commentators have a live sharing, We Island Dance Festival and, Inclusive Arts Program. Note: The character 驫 is pronounced as “biao” , refers to horses galloping in herd.
Li-Chin Li
Born in Taichung, Taiwan, Li-Chin Li is a Sheng soloist, composer, and performer. Majored in Chinese Music at the Tainan National University of the Arts, Li-Chin received solid training in traditional music education. After graduation, she worked for the most selective and prestige Orchestra, Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra as a Sheng performer. Li-chin soon figured a nine-to-five job doesn't suit her for making her own music and performing. Li-chin is known for her ability to apply Sheng to various art forms and music genres. Through her work, she is committed to exploring musicians' subjectivity and diversity of roles in the performing arts. Recently, she strives to express her musical creativity beyond auditory stimuli. In her performance, she wants the audience to enter a world to experience the unknown. She regularly explores her instrument with young composers of contemporary music in France, the United States, Taiwan, etc. And plays with European ensembles and orchestras: Cairn in Paris, LINEA in Strasbourg, Lapland Chamber Orchestra in Finland, National Chinese Orchestra in Taiwan etc. She has been selected for dozens of artistic residencies in her experimental field, including Royaumont, Ircam, Cité des Arts - Paris, Centre National de la Danse in Pantin, Asian Cultural Council in New York, Avaloch, Farm Music Institute in the U.S. etc. Li-Chin is taking part in the research and creation project "sheng! l'orgue à bouche" (2019-2026) organised by the TPMC and supported by the DRAC Ile-de-France, IReMus (CNRS - Sorbonne Université - Ministère de la Culture - BnF), MMC etc.
